EDF offers free air fryers and heated blankets to pensioners

Energy supplier EDF has pledged £30 million of funding to support vulnerable customers this tax year, including a winter support package that could provide state pensioner households and other eligible groups with free air fryers, heated blankets and other items.

Winter support package details

The package could see customers given slow cookers, air fryers, heated throws and hot water bottles. Some eligible customers may also receive payments to help clear their energy debts, along with free gas safety checks and assistance for blind or partially sighted customers.

EDF also works with charities including Age UK and Scope to reach those in need.

Gas safety checks and meter help

For state pensioners, EDF states: "If you get certain benefits or a state pension, you might be able to get a free gas safety check once a year. You'll need to fill out a form each year to apply for your gas safety check (the form will help you work out if you qualify)."

If an application is successful, EDF arranges for a Gas Safe engineer to visit and check gas appliances and fittings. The firm also offers to move prepayment meters to a safer location or exchange them for a more suitable payment method at no extra charge for those who struggle to access them.

Priority Services Register

EDF encourages vulnerable customers, such as those with medical conditions, to join the Priority Services Register (PSR), a free service available across the energy and water industries in England, Wales and Scotland.

The company explains that energy suppliers and network operators, with customer consent, keep and share PSR information securely to provide additional services tailored to support equal access, particularly in communication, access and safety needs. Examples include households with young or elderly dependants, someone recovering after hospital discharge, or those using electricity-dependent medical equipment.
