Road trips could become a bit more affordable this summer, at least for diners stopping at Cracker Barrel. The iconic roadside restaurant chain is offering complimentary fuel and meals as part of a major seasonal promotion designed to attract budget-conscious travellers facing persistently high petrol prices and tighter household budgets.
Fuel Your Summer Road Trip Sweepstakes
Under its new 'Fuel Your Summer Road Trip' sweepstakes, Cracker Barrel will distribute a total of $250,000 in prizes between now and July 26. Two hundred and fifty winners will each receive $1,000 towards summer travel expenses. Every prize package includes a $500 Cracker Barrel gift card along with a separate $500 petrol gift card, providing assistance both at the restaurant table and at the fuel pump.
The promotion comes as Americans continue to feel the pinch from elevated travel costs. According to AAA, national petrol prices surged above $4.50 per gallon earlier this spring, making family road trips significantly more expensive than in previous years.
Nostalgia and Loyalty
The diner chain, long associated with interstate pit stops and family vacations, appears to be leaning heavily into nostalgia as it battles softer restaurant traffic and cautious consumer spending. 'Road trips are synonymous with summer, and our goal is to help our guests take the trip, see the country and make new memories,' said Sarah Moore, chief marketing officer at Cracker Barrel, in a statement announcing the giveaway. 'So many of our guests have wonderful memories of their summer road trips with family and friends, and Cracker Barrel has always been a favourite stop along the way,' she added.
The company says the campaign is designed to make summer travel 'feel a little easier – both at the table and at the pump.' The catch is that customers must join Cracker Barrel's free loyalty programme to participate. Travellers can sign up through the chain's official website and earn entries by purchasing meals or retail items. Customers receive one entry for every qualifying entrée purchased in-store or via takeout, while buying retail merchandise unlocks additional entries. Diners can also score bonus entries when they order Cracker Barrel's seasonal Campfire Meals.
Loyalty Rewards Push
The company is also pushing its loyalty rewards programme more aggressively, allowing customers to collect points – known as 'pegs' – that can later be redeemed for free food, desserts, drinks and side dishes. Cracker Barrel's promotion highlights the growing pressure many casual dining chains are facing as inflation continues to strain household budgets.
Like several legacy restaurant brands, Cracker Barrel has also faced tougher competition from fast-casual chains, delivery apps and newer dining concepts targeting younger customers. Industry analysts say chains tied to road travel and tourism have been especially vulnerable as families rethink expensive vacations and long-distance driving trips.
Modernisation Efforts
The company has recently rolled out updated menu offerings, revamped store designs and expanded loyalty perks as it attempts to reverse slowing traffic trends, but these changes haven't been welcomed by all. The restaurant, known for its Southern classics like biscuits and fried chicken, faced immense scrutiny last August when – under the leadership of CEO Julie Felss Masino – it scrapped its classic 'Old Timer' logo in favour of a simplified design. Prior to this change, Cracker Barrel had announced plans to 'modernise' its restaurants by featuring brighter, contemporary decor. The chain said it would also be changing its menu. Following more than a week of mounting controversy over the logo change, Cracker Barrel abandoned the new design, reinstated the Old Timer, and put its store modernisation plans and menu edits on hold.
