The Co-operative Bank has escalated the current account switching war by offering new customers up to £300 in free cash, including a loyalty bonus for existing customers. The deal, described as the bank's best-ever switching offer, is part of a broader trend among high street banks to attract customers with perks and monetary incentives.
How the Co-operative Bank Offer Works
New customers who switch to the Co-operative Bank's standard current account or Everyday Extra packaged account can receive up to £200. To qualify for the first £125, customers must deposit at least £1,500, set up two active direct debits, and make five debit card transactions within 30 days of the switch completing. An additional £75 is available for those who deposit a further £1,500, make another five debit card transactions, and maintain two direct debits for an additional three months.
Customers who already hold another Co-operative Bank product, such as a mortgage or savings account, can also receive a £100 loyalty bonus when switching their current account. This applies to customers of the Coventry Building Society, which acquired the Co-operative Bank in early 2025. Both the standard and Everyday Extra accounts offer access to a savings account with up to 7% interest, allowing customers to save up to £250 per month with a minimum deposit of £1.
Everyday Extra Account Features and Fees
The Everyday Extra account, which charges a monthly fee of £12 (reduced from £18), includes perks such as travel and mobile phone insurance, and European car breakdown cover. Rachel Springall, finance expert at Moneyfacts, commented: “With household budgets under pressure, it can be difficult for customers to decide where to spend their money, so having current account options that are good value and free from unnecessary fees really matters. The Everyday Extra account is now a more affordable choice, with its monthly fee slashed to £12.” She added that packaged accounts can be a great cost-saver for holidaymakers, and that removing foreign transaction fees on debit card spending makes both accounts more straightforward to use abroad.
Other Banks' Switching Offers
The Co-operative Bank is not alone in offering incentives. NatWest is offering £200 for customers who switch to its fee-free Select or £2-a-month Reward accounts using the Current Account Switch Service. To qualify, customers must pay in £1,250 and log in to the mobile app within 60 days of switching. Barclays is offering a £200 thank you for new customers who switch by August 27, set up at least two direct debits, and pay in at least £2,000 within 30 days of opening the account. Santander, Nationwide Building Society, HSBC, and its sister bank First Direct are also running similar bonuses.
Impact on Consumers
These offers come as households face ongoing financial pressures, making it crucial for consumers to evaluate current account options carefully. The Co-operative Bank's offer, with its potential to provide up to £300, represents one of the most generous deals currently available, though customers must meet specific requirements to receive the full amount.
