If you share a complicated relationship with household chores, you likely understand that while the results are rewarding, the process of cleaning often fills you with dread. This is especially true when tackling the oven, particularly those troublesome racks that accumulate burnt-on grime over months.
The Cleaning Challenge: Oven Racks
I generally prefer natural cleaning methods where feasible, but when oven racks gather stubborn grease, professional cleaners become essential. Recently, I tested two popular options: Oven Pride and Elbow Grease Oven Cleaner, to see which performed best in a head-to-head comparison.
Product Details and Pricing
Oven Pride, purchased from Asda for £3.44, was positioned next to Elbow Grease Oven Cleaner, priced at £2.25—nearly £1 cheaper. Both products are marketed as industrial-strength, fume-free solutions designed to eliminate burnt-on grease and carbon build-up from ovens, grills, and hobs without requiring vigorous scrubbing.
Each kit includes gloves, a plastic bag, and a cleaning solution. Upon unpacking, the Oven Pride kit featured noticeably superior gloves and bag quality, hinting at its higher price point.
Testing Methodology
With four oven racks needing attention, I treated two with Oven Pride and two with Elbow Grease. Following the instructions, I placed two racks in each bag, added three-quarters of the respective cleaning solutions, and sealed them. Both products recommend leaving the racks for about four hours, but I opted to leave them overnight for a more thorough clean, placing the bags outside as a precaution against leaks.
Immediately, the liquid in both bags turned brown as the grime began to loosen. However, a key difference emerged: Oven Pride was completely odourless, while Elbow Grease emitted a powerful, almost fishy smell, necessitating open windows during use.
Results and Comparison
The next day, the solutions had darkened to a deep brown, almost black. Without rinsing, the Oven Pride racks appeared gleaming, but the Elbow Grease racks still showed brown stains. After draining the solutions safely and wiping the racks with washing-up liquid, the results were clear.
The racks cleaned with Oven Pride, which were less heavily stained initially, were shiny but retained a few tiny stains. In contrast, the racks cleaned with Elbow Grease were immaculate, with not a single stain visible, and the grime came off effortlessly without any scrubbing.
Final Verdict
Both cleaning products performed admirably in revitalising oven racks, but Elbow Grease Oven Cleaner emerged as the clear winner. Despite its strong odour, it is more affordable and delivers a more effective clean, making it the superior choice for tackling tough grease. For occasional use, tolerating the scent is a small price to pay for spotless results.
