Millions of British adults are facing an 'adulting crisis' as new research exposes alarming gaps in basic practical skills that were once considered fundamental life knowledge.
The Skills Deficit Exposed
A comprehensive survey of 2,000 UK adults has uncovered that nearly half the population (46%) would struggle to change a car tyre, while a third confess they couldn't bleed a radiator or put up a shelf without assistance. The findings paint a concerning picture of practical competence across the nation.
Most Common Struggles
According to the research commissioned by Hunkydory Home, Brits are most likely to need help with:
- Car maintenance - including tyre changes and basic repairs
- Household DIY - from putting up shelves to basic plumbing
- Financial paperwork - understanding taxes and official documents
- Home maintenance - dealing with common household issues
Generational Knowledge Gap
The study suggests a significant generational divide, with younger adults particularly affected. Nearly two-thirds of 18-24 year olds admitted they wouldn't know where to start with many basic tasks that previous generations took for granted.
'There appears to be a growing skills gap when it comes to practical knowledge,' noted a spokesperson for the research team. 'Many adults feel unprepared for everyday challenges that require hands-on solutions.'
Seeking Solutions
Despite the struggles, there's hope on the horizon. The research found that 68% of respondents expressed interest in learning these essential skills, suggesting a growing recognition of the value of practical knowledge in daily life.
As one respondent confessed: 'I've watched countless YouTube tutorials, but there's no substitute for actually being shown how to do these things properly.'
