Half of Britons support a ban on loud food in certain places and want 'eat considerately' warnings on noisy snacks, according to a new poll of 2,000 people. The study, conducted by Ryvita, found that noisy eating has been named one of the most annoying habits in Britain, with high-volume chomping ranking higher than people using speakerphones on trains, snoring, crying babies, and barking dogs.
Noisiest Foods Revealed
The poll identified crisps as the noisiest food to eat, followed by crackers, tortilla chips, and raw carrots. Two-thirds of respondents believe people are less considerate about eating in public than in the past. The most unacceptable places to eat loudly include libraries, cinemas, theatres, and quiet carriages on trains.
In cinemas and theatres, noisy eating was the most irritating habit at 61%, followed by smelly food at 55%. In libraries, noisy eating also topped the list, but in quiet carriages on trains, smelly food was considered more annoying than noisy eating.
Domestic Disputes Over Eating Habits
At home, 80% of people said they have argued with a partner over their eating habits. The research coincides with the launch of Ryvita Sticks, a crunchy crisp-alternative snack available in Salt & Vinegar and Sour Cream & Chive flavours. Described by consumers as 'a healthier alternative to crisps', Ryvita Sticks offer snack lovers a new option.
A Ryvita spokeswoman said: 'Brits clearly love crunchy snacks, but we found we are becoming far less forgiving about where people eat them. Many people feel everyday etiquette is slipping.'
