A binman on social media has finally settled the ongoing debate about whether supermarket carrier bags can be recycled. With the introduction of the Simpler Recycling regulations earlier this year, confusion over what can and cannot be recycled at home has grown. The 'Binfluencer', known as No1 Binman on TikTok, has amassed a following of over 170,000 people by offering practical advice on waste disposal.
Are Carrier Bags Recyclable?
One user asked the binman: 'Can someone settle a debate for me. Tesco bags, are they recyclable? Says on them they are, but it doesn't feel right.' In response, the binman confirmed that carrier bags are indeed recyclable, but not in the way many might assume. He stressed that these bags cannot be placed in household recycling bins. Instead, they should be returned to supermarkets, which often have dedicated collection points for plastic bag recycling.
The reason for this restriction is that carrier bags can clog the machinery at recycling centres, causing operational issues. The binman advised that the best disposal method is to either place them in general waste or, ideally, continue reusing them as intended. 'Bags for life' are designed to be durable and reused multiple times, reducing the need for single-use plastics.
What About Paper Bags?
Paper carrier bags are subject to different rules. According to experts at Best Pac UK, paper bags are widely recyclable, provided they are made solely from paper. However, laminated paper bags, which often have a plastic film lining for carrying food, cannot be recycled due to the mixed materials. The experts noted that recycling paper bags helps reduce plastic waste in landfills and oceans, making them a more environmentally friendly option when properly disposed of.
In summary, while carrier bags can be recycled, the process requires consumer effort—returning them to supermarkets rather than relying on kerbside collections. The binman's advice aims to clear up misconceptions and encourage responsible waste management.
