Disagreements over whether to sleep with the bedroom window open are a common source of tension for couples, with one Reddit user reporting feeling "betrayed" after a partner reopened a window they had agreed to keep shut.
Couples clash over overnight temperatures
The issue has been debated for years on Reddit. One user, @Kiwi-Dragonfly, wrote in the r/relationship_advice subreddit that after moving in with her boyfriend, she adjusted to fully open windows during summer and fall, wearing thicker pyjamas and using a heating pad. When temperatures dropped, the couple agreed to sleep with everything closed, but the agreement did not last.
"I woke up super cold… when I turned around to the window, I see it open a slit again," the Redditor wrote. "I feel really betrayed he did that, even though I asked him not to. I felt like he didn't care about my wellbeing."
Another user, @ptinnl, asked for help from fellow men over 30, saying his girlfriend insisted on opening several windows every morning because she said "the house smells and the temperature is too high." He added: "I never felt the need to open windows like that every day… I'm getting a bit annoyed."
Ventilation habits vary by culture
The preference for fresh air is not universal. In Germany, many follow the concept of stoßlüften, or 'house burping', where all windows and doors are opened for a set period, usually about 10 minutes, every day. This is done at all times of year regardless of the outdoor temperature. According to All About Berlin, ventilation is so embedded in the country's ethos that it is sometimes included in tenancy agreements.
Experts advise compromise
Annabelle Knight, Lovehoney's sex and relationship expert, told Metro that the contentious nature of the issue is partly due to the physical discomfort of being too cold or too hot, which can "supercharge our emotions." She added that "an unwillingness to compromise can be a big red flag in a relationship, as compromise is based on trust and communication."
Knight suggested that couples "communicate openly and reach a compromise," such as opening the window but investing in a warmer duvet, or closing the window and opting for a smaller duvet. "The method doesn't matter, as long as a fair and agreeable solution is reached together," she said.
