BBC TV Licence refund rules: who can claim £180 back

Households may be able to get money back from their £180 TV licence if they no longer need it, buy one by mistake, or qualify for a concession. TV Licensing rules set out the circumstances under which a refund can be claimed.

When can you claim a refund?

To claim because you no longer need a licence, there must be at least one full month left on it. Those who qualify for a concession because they are over-75 or blind can apply at any time, regardless of how long is left on their licence.

TV Licensing says: "Working out precise refund amounts can be complicated. But we will do it for you. We'll look carefully at the information you give us and let you know if we can offer you a refund, and how much it will be."

How refunds are calculated

Refunds are calculated in unused months, with claims potentially covering between one and 11 months. If a refund is approved, the licence ends immediately.

Other possible reasons for a refund include the address being covered by another licence, TV equipment no longer being used, the death of the licence holder, or a replacement licence being bought.
