A bar owner in Greater Manchester has defended his decision to ban solo drinkers after 9pm, insisting he will not apologise despite criticism. Carl Peters, who owns the cocktail and karaoke bar Alibi in Altrincham, said the policy is in place for safety reasons.
In a video posted to the bar’s Instagram page, Mr Peters explained the rule, which prohibits single entry after 9pm. He said that if something happens to a lone customer in a busy, late-night environment, it is “an absolute nightmare” to deal with. He also noted that solo drinkers may “start mithering other groups” because they have no one to talk to.
A sign on the door states: “No single entry. After 9pm, Alibi does not permit single entry. If you are with guests already inside the venue, please contact them in advance of entry. This is for the safety of all guests.”
Reaction on social media has been mixed. Some commenters praised the policy, saying they “always feel safe in Alibi”, while others called it “narrow minded”. One critic said he has “never once mithered anyone” and is “happy in my own company” when drinking alone after a late shift.
In a follow-up video, Mr Peters said: “I won’t apologise for prioritising people’s welfare, safety. When they come to Alibi that is the number one priority for us.” He stressed that solo customers are welcome before 9pm and that the policy is only enforced when the bar is “absolutely packed” and resembles a nightclub. He described the rule as “standard procedure in nightlife”.
