Beware of Online Puppy Scams: How to Spot Fraud Before You Buy
Avoid online puppy scams with these tips

Online pet sales have surged in recent years, but so too have scams targeting unsuspecting buyers. Fraudsters are exploiting the high demand for puppies by posting fake adverts, often using stolen photos and fabricated stories to lure in victims.

How the Scam Works

Criminals create convincing listings on social media or classified sites, offering popular breeds at tempting prices. Once a buyer expresses interest, the seller pressures them to pay a deposit or full amount upfront—often via untraceable methods like bank transfers. After payment, the puppy never arrives, and the seller vanishes.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • Too-good-to-be-true prices: Purebred dogs sold well below market value are a major warning sign.
  • Rushed transactions: Scammers push for quick payments, often inventing urgent reasons.
  • No video calls: Refusal to show the puppy live or meet in person is a common tactic.
  • Vague paperwork: Lack of vaccination records or Kennel Club documentation should raise suspicions.

How to Protect Yourself

Experts recommend always viewing the puppy in person with its mother present. Reputable breeders will never pressure buyers or skip this step. Additionally:

  1. Use trusted platforms with buyer protection policies.
  2. Verify the seller’s identity and address.
  3. Pay by secure methods like credit card, which offer fraud protection.

The RSPCA warns that many scam puppies are sourced from illegal puppy farms, where animals suffer in poor conditions. By falling for these scams, buyers may inadvertently support cruel practices.

If you suspect fraud, report it to Action Fraud and notify the advertising platform immediately. Always prioritise animal welfare—adopting from shelters remains the safest ethical choice.
