Aldi's Mini Eggs Outshine Cadbury in Surprising Taste Comparison

Easter is nearly upon us, and supermarkets nationwide are overflowing with seasonal sweets and chocolate delights. Each year, Cadbury staples such as Creme Eggs and Mini Eggs make a highly anticipated return to shelves, while many retailers introduce their own similar products, often at lower prices.

This is precisely the case with Aldi's Choceur Mini Eggs, which come in packaging reminiscent of Cadbury's yellow bags but cost slightly less. But how do they stack up against the original? Food influencer Becca Stock, known on TikTok as Becca Eats Everything, was determined to find out.

The Price and Purchase Details

Becca bought a 256g bag of Cadbury Mini Eggs from Tesco, surprised to pay £5 even on offer—online, they retail for £6.20. She then picked up Aldi's alternative, a 256g bag priced at £3.99, making it significantly cheaper.

The Taste Test Results

The 29-year-old influencer, with over half a million followers on TikTok, first sampled the Cadbury eggs. She found the shell softer than expected, lacking the distinctive crunch she remembered. In contrast, Aldi's Mini Chocolate Eggs delivered a crunchier shell, and although the chocolate filling wasn't as creamy as Cadbury's, Becca preferred Aldi's centre overall.

Becca, from Gloucester, Gloucestershire, explained, "They [Mini Eggs] are probably my favourite Cadbury's product, with Creme Eggs being a close second. I was in Tesco and couldn't believe it was nearly £5 for a standard bag on offer. I thought, there's got to be a better option."

She continued, "The shell had changed—it was soft and didn't have the usual crunch. That's what made me want to try others. The ones from Aldi were £3.99 for the same weight. They were all-round better: the shell was crunchy and thicker, and the chocolate was just as good. It wasn't as creamy as Cadbury's, but I actually preferred it."

Viral Reaction and Final Verdict

Becca uploaded a video comparing the treats on TikTok on February 10, which has since garnered over 720,000 views. She noted, "If these [Aldi's mini chocolate eggs] were put in a bowl without branding, I'd have a hard time knowing they weren't Cadbury. The shell is great, and the chocolate inside is nice and sweet."

When she tried the Cadbury originals after Aldi's version, she felt they tasted "almost stale" and lacked crunch. Becca concluded, "Aldi, you're knocking the socks off me. I'm giving these a nine out of ten." She has now switched allegiance, opting for Aldi's alternative over Cadbury's original product.

Retailer Responses

Tesco confirmed that Cadbury Mini Eggs 256g are on offer with the Tesco Clubcard for £5, stating this is comparable to other retailers. Julie Ashfield, chief commercial officer at Aldi UK, said, "With Easter fast approaching, our customers want chocolate that delivers on both taste and value, and our Choceur Mini Chocolate Eggs does just that. We've loved seeing the buzz on social media." Cadbury has been approached for comment but has not yet responded.
