A taste test of Halloween sweet tubs from Lidl and Aldi, both priced under £4, found that Aldi's smaller tub won for flavour, with one reviewer saying it tasted just like Haribo. The comparison rated the tubs on flavour, price and spookiness.
Lidl's Spooky Sweet Mix Offers Variety
Lidl's Halloween Spooky Sweet Mix came in a 1kg tub priced at £4.99, though a £1 off promotion at the till meant the final cost was £3.99. The main advantage was the variety, with sweets in yellow, green, purple, red, fluorescent blue and multi-colours, featuring shapes such as skulls, ears, coffins and large bats with dual-coloured wings.
However, the taste and texture were a downside. The sweets were more chewy than a Haribo sweet, and although some appeared to have the same white foam layer as a classic Starmix bag, the texture was different. They were quite sweet and sickly, and the reviewer was not reaching for more after sampling the different types.
Aldi's Smaller Tub Wins on Flavour
Aldi's tub was smaller at 600g and priced at £3.69, which was not quite as good value when considering the Lidl promotion. However, the flavours were really tasty, with distinct citrus, blackcurrant and berry flavours that were not overly sweet or sickly.
There was not as much variety in shapes and colours as Lidl, and it was harder to tell these were Halloween sweets, but they did have cute ghost, bat and skull shapes. The soft white foam base of some of the sweets was just like Haribo, and the reviewer would not have noticed the difference if not for seeing the shapes and packaging.
For this reviewer, Aldi was the winner, though those seeking something more fun might opt for Lidl.
