A recent taste test comparing Oreo biscuits with supermarket alternatives has revealed a surprising winner: Aldi's own-brand cookies and cream biscuits, priced at just 49p, outperformed the branded Oreo in flavour and value.
The Challenge
Oreos have become a household staple in the UK, known for their distinctive cookies and cream flavour. However, many supermarkets offer their own versions. Mia O'Hare, a Senior Spare Time Reporter, decided to test biscuits from Lidl, Asda, Marks & Spencer, and Aldi against the original Oreo.
Lidl - £1.59 (Jumbo Neo)
The Lidl biscuit was too tough and crunchy, lacking the crumbly texture that makes Oreos appealing. The flavour was also weaker compared to others. Score: 2/10.
Asda - 58p
Asda's biscuits had a crumblier texture closer to Oreo, but the flavour could have been stronger. Score: 6/10.
M&S - £1
M&S biscuits had the most cream and a good texture, though they crumbled easily. The taste was enjoyable, reminiscent of a custard cream. Score: 8/10.
Oreo - £1.28 (reduced to 85p at Asda)
The branded biscuits delivered the classic cookies and cream flavour with a crumbly texture, earning a high score of 9/10.
Aldi - 49p
Aldi's biscuits matched Oreo in taste and texture, looking nearly identical. They offered the same flavour at a fraction of the price, making them the best value. Score: 10/10.
Overall, the cheapest option proved to be the best, proving that you don't need to spend a lot for a delicious treat.
