The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that automatic payments of £200 will be made to eligible state pensioners under the age of 80 this winter. The £200 is a Winter Fuel Payment for pensioners in England, Wales and Northern Ireland born on or before June 27, 1960, to help with heating bills.
Who Qualifies for the £200 Payment
Winter Fuel Payments range between £100 and £200, with the exact amount determined by age and individual circumstances. According to DWP eligibility criteria for winter 2026 to 2027, pensioners under 80 who live alone and were born between September 28, 1946 and June 27, 1960 will typically receive £200.
Pensioners born before September 28, 1946 who live with a partner will also get £200 if the person they live with was born between September 28, 1946 and June 27, 1960.
Payment Amounts for Different Circumstances
For pensioners aged 80 or over living alone and born before September 28, 1946, the payment is £300. This also applies if you were born before this date and no one you live with is eligible for the payment.
If you live with someone else who is eligible, amounts vary from £100 to £200 depending on circumstances. Payments may differ if you receive Pension Credit, Universal Credit or Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA).
The DWP confirmed: "If you live alone or no one you live with is eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment, you’ll get either: £200 if you were born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960, £300 if you were born before 28 September 1946."
For those living with someone eligible, the DWP states: "If you do not get any of the benefits, you’ll get a payment of: £100 if you and the person you live with were both born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960, £100 if you were born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960 but the person you live with was born before 28 September 1946, £200 if you were born before 28 September 1946 but the person you live with was born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960, £150 if you and the person you live with were both born before 28 September 1946."
For joint benefit claims: "£200 if both of you were born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960, £300 if one or both of you were born before 28 September 1946."
Automatic Payments and Claim Process
Most pensioners receiving 12 benefits—including State Pension, Pension Credit, Universal Credit, Attendance Allowance, PIP, Carer’s Allowance, DLA, income-related ESA, War Pensions Scheme awards, Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit, Incapacity Benefit, and Industrial Death Benefit—will receive the payment automatically in November or December without needing to claim.
If you don't receive any of these benefits, you must submit a claim if you've not received the payment before or have deferred your State Pension since your last payment. Letters confirming payment amounts will be sent in October or November, with money paid in November or December.
The DWP said: "Most payments are made automatically in November or December. You should get a letter telling you: How much will you get, Which bank account it will be paid into - this is usually the same account as your State Pension or other benefits. If you do not get a letter or the money has not been paid into your account by 27 January 2027, contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre."
Pensioners with total income over £35,000 will have the payment automatically recovered by HMRC via tax code changes or Self Assessment. The opt-out deadline for this year has passed, but pensioners can opt out of next year's payment from December 21. Opting out doesn't affect State Pension and isn't required annually. To opt back in for winter 2026 to 2027, contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre before March 31, 2027.
