England face Spain in the UEFA Nations League on Saturday, two months after the World Cup 2026 final ended in chaotic scenes between Spain and Argentina. The match, which Spain won 1-0 after extra time, was followed by a post-match brawl that resulted in significant punishments from FIFA.
What happened in the final?
The final was a tense contest. Argentina's Enzo Fernandez was shown a red card for a second bookable offence at the end of normal time, setting a hostile tone. After the full-time whistle, Argentina's Leandro Paredes grabbed Spain's Eric Garcia by the throat and pushed unused substitute Gavi to the ground, sparking a brawl between both squads on the pitch.
The situation escalated when Paredes' teammate Nahuel Molina attempted to knock over Spain captain Rodri. Coaching staff also became involved, with Argentina coach Roberto Ayala attempting to punch Spanish player Dani Olmo in the face.
FIFA's punishments
FIFA responded with strict sanctions. Paredes received a 10-match suspension, Molina a seven-game ban, and Ayala a three-match suspension. In addition to individual bans and fines, the Argentine Football Association was fined £235,000 for the brawl and for displaying a Falklands banner following their semi-final win against England.
England were eliminated by Argentina in the semi-finals of the World Cup before they had the chance to take on Spain. The Three Lions now host Spain at Wembley in the UEFA Nations League on Saturday.
