Manchester City midfielder Rodri is set to undergo surgery for a mystery injury once Spain's World Cup campaign concludes, dealing an early blow to new manager Enzo Maresca's tenure. The influential midfielder will miss the start of the season, though the setback is not expected to be severe, according to the Daily Mail.
Rodri's Surgery and Contract Situation
Spain faces Austria in the World Cup round of 32 on Thursday, and Rodri will go under the knife after their elimination. Manchester City have declined to comment on the reports. Rodri is entering the final 12 months of his contract at the Etihad Stadium and has an offer on the table, but talks are not ongoing amid speculation of a move to Real Madrid. He could sign a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs from January 1 and join them on a free transfer next summer.
Impact on Maresca's Pre-Season
Rodri's surgery means Maresca will be without a key player during his first pre-season in charge. The 2024 Ballon d'Or winner has struggled with fitness since an ACL injury almost two years ago. Maresca, who signed a three-year deal after a compensation fee was agreed with Chelsea, said: 'Manchester City is a club I know very well and to have the chance to manage this team is a brilliant opportunity for me.'
Other Contract Concerns
Defender Nathan Ake is also entering the final year of his contract, leaving the club with a decision this summer. Rodri's potential departure would reunite him with former City teammate Bernardo Silva, who joined Real Madrid under Jose Mourinho this summer.
