Hunter Schafer Reveals 'Amazing' Gender-Affirming Surgery

Euphoria actor Hunter Schafer has publicly confirmed that she underwent gender-affirming surgery. In an interview with Elle magazine, the 27-year-old disclosed that she had lower body surgery in December, a procedure that alters a person's genitals to align with their gender identity.

Schafer Opens Up About Surgery and Recovery

Schafer described the experience positively, stating, "I just had bottom surgery in December, which was amazing, and I love it so much." She also reflected on the decision, saying, "Maybe it's a good thing to share, for the tension I was talking about between those two worlds (reality and ideology)."

The actor, who rose to fame playing transgender high school student Jules Vaughn in the HBO series Euphoria alongside Zendaya, Jacob Elordi, and Sydney Sweeney, explained that she had previously tried to embrace her body as it was. "For a long time I've embraced the gender-expansive part of myself, and I really wanted to try to make that previous body work, because I thought there was something really cool and badass about it," she said. However, she ultimately concluded that medically transitioning was right for her, while acknowledging that every trans person is different.

During her recovery, Schafer rented a large apartment and had friends and family visit while she was required to rest. She noted, "I think my limit was 150 steps per day, which is nothing."

Personal Growth Since Euphoria

Schafer also spoke about how much she has changed since she was first cast in Euphoria, which premiered in 2019. She described herself then as "just a baby" and "a different person in a lot of ways," adding, "I was really introverted and not set on performing in front of people at all. There was this shell that was there that's not with me any more."

On relationships, Schafer, who has previously dated Spanish pop star Rosalia and her Euphoria co-star Dominic Fike, remarked, "I haven't had a relationship that's been longer than two years, and I've heard the two-year mark is when it gets more like a partnership rather than some passionate whatever-it-is."
