Energy companies including British Gas, Octopus Energy, E.ON, EDF, and OVO are offering cash boosts, freebies, and discounts to customers this summer, with some households able to claim up to £1,700 in help. The support comes as household energy bills rose again in July for those not on a fixed tariff, adding an average 13% to typical electricity and gas costs.
British Gas Energy Trust Offers Up to £1,700
The British Gas Energy Trust's Individual and Families Fund provides up to £1,700 to households, including state pensioners, who are struggling with energy debts. The fund is open to British Gas customers with credit or pre-payment meter accounts. To qualify, applicants must live in England, Scotland, or Wales and not have received a grant from the Trust in the past 12 months.
Eligible customers must be seeking a grant to clear an outstanding debt on a current or open gas, electricity, or dual fuel account in their name, or be a household member. The account must be for the applicant's main residence. A minimum debt of £50 on a pre-payment meter or £250 on a credit account is required, with a maximum debt of £1,700 for gas or electricity.
EDF Heatwave Relief Packs for Vulnerable Households
EDF is offering Heatwave Relief Packs to up to 10,000 eligible customers through a scheme aimed at helping vulnerable households keep their homes cool. The packages, worth up to £100, can include fans, blackout curtains, and reusable water bottles, along with a £20 energy bill discount to cover the cost of running fans.
E.ON Next and Octopus Energy Support Schemes
E.ON Next customers can apply for help through its E.On Next Energy Fund if they are struggling to pay bills. Octopus Energy runs its own scheme available year-round, and its Octo Assist program can provide customers with a free electric blanket in winter, worth an average £300 saving.
According to British Gas, the Trust aims to help those in need clear their energy debts and avoid further financial hardship. The application process requires proof of income and debt details.
