EDF is launching a £1 million initiative to provide free fans and energy credit to vulnerable households this summer, as the UK faces extreme heat. Up to 10,000 customers will receive tailored support worth up to £100, including energy-efficient fans, thermal blackout curtains, reflective window film, reusable hydration bottles, cooling towels, and up to £20 of electricity credit or vouchers. The energy supplier will identify eligible customers through support teams, referrals from partners, and direct engagement.
Record Heat Driving Action
The UK recorded its highest ever June temperature of 37.7°C last month, with amber and yellow heat health alerts in place across England this week as highs of 35°C are forecast. Joe Souto, Director of Retail at EDF, said: "When temperatures fall sharply in winter, there is widespread recognition that vulnerable households may need extra support to stay safe and warm. We believe the same principle should apply when temperatures become dangerously high." He added that some customers face a "summer version of the 'heating or eating' dilemma," reluctant to use fans due to cost concerns.
Energy Bills Rise Amid Heat
The initiative comes as energy bills rose by around 13% on July 1, with the Ofgem price cap increasing from £1,641 to £1,862 a year for typical direct debit households. The cap remains in place until October, when it will be updated again. Cornwall Insight expects a typical household bill of £1,849 from October, adding pressure as heating use resumes in cooler months. EDF's Heatwave Relief Packs aim to help vulnerable customers stay safe without worrying about the cost of running cooling equipment.
