Moises Caicedo Named Ecuador Captain as Enner Valencia Steps Down
Caicedo Takes Ecuador Captaincy as Valencia Quits Mid-World Cup

Moises Caicedo, the Chelsea midfielder, has been appointed as Ecuador's new captain during the 2026 World Cup, taking over from Enner Valencia, who stepped down from the role mid-tournament. The change was announced ahead of Ecuador's round of 32 match against Mexico.

Valencia Steps Down After Group Stage

Enner Valencia, who had been captain since 2019, decided to relinquish the armband after Ecuador secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Germany in their final Group E fixture. That win lifted Ecuador to third place in the group, enough to advance to the knockout phase. Valencia started all three group matches but failed to score, while Caicedo also started every game.

In an emotional ceremony alongside Valencia, Caicedo was unveiled as the new captain and will lead the team for the remainder of the tournament. Ecuador had collected just one point from their first two matches—a 1-0 loss to Ivory Coast and a goalless draw with Curacao—leaving them at risk of elimination before the Germany win.

Caicedo's Captaincy Experience

Caicedo is no stranger to leadership duties. He wore the captain's armband for Ecuador during a friendly victory over New Zealand in November 2025. At club level, he captained Chelsea on two occasions in the Premier League last season—in losses to Manchester United and Manchester City in April 2026. He also led Chelsea to wins over Cardiff City in the Carabao Cup quarter-final and Charlton Athletic in the FA Cup third round.

Ecuador now face Mexico in Mexico City on Tuesday night in the round of 32. A victory could set up a last-16 tie against either England or DR Congo, giving Caicedo a potential meeting with several of his Chelsea teammates.
