Arsenal's £60m Yildiz-Martinelli swap deal mooted as Ferdinand hails Konsa 'steal'
Arsenal's £60m Yildiz-Martinelli swap mooted as Ferdinand hails Konsa

Arsenal will begin their 2026/27 Premier League title defence by hosting newly-promoted Coventry City on Friday evening. The reigning champions have been active in the transfer market, bringing in midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle for £75 million, defender Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa for £51 million, and former Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis for £34 million. Tzolis, who recorded two assists in the 3-0 Community Shield victory over Manchester City, could retain his place in the starting lineup.

More arrivals are expected before the summer transfer window closes on September 1, but manager Mikel Arteta must first focus on overcoming Frank Lampard's Coventry side. Here is the latest from the Emirates Stadium.

Ferdinand lauds 'magnificent signing'

Rio Ferdinand has endorsed Arsenal's recruitment of Ezri Konsa, as reported by the Mirror. The former Manchester United defender described the £51 million transfer from Aston Villa as "magnificent" and called the fee for the England international a "steal."

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand said: "I think this is a magnificent signing. A player in his prime who knows exactly who he is and what he is. There's no frills about him. He's a solid, really, really, really good Premier League defender.

"I think it's an absolute steal in today's market. 28-years-old, minimum four or five years of really, really solid, dependable service, and he provides vital cover in two areas: centre-half and right-back.

"You've got Ben White, who seems fit now, but has had injuries in the right-back area. You've got Timber, who hasn't been able to stay fit as well, and William Saliba's injury concerns as well.

"He's going to be great cover. Someone who can come in there and just play straight away, no questions asked. And that versatility at the top level, the reliability as well, both right-back and centre-half, absolute steal."

He added: "If you go and get him, that just reinforces why I think Arsenal are going to go and win the league again, because it's a sensible and very good signing."

Yildiz-Martinelli swap deal mooted

Arsenal's pursuit of Juventus winger Kenan Yildiz could see them offer Gabriel Martinelli as part of a swap deal, according to reports. Arteta is known to be seeking a world-class left winger, with Yildiz among his preferred targets.

The 21-year-old Turkey international signed a new contract earlier this year that runs until 2030, meaning Juventus are expected to demand a substantial fee. The Independent reports that they would seek over £60 million to sell, though one potential solution is for Arsenal to send Martinelli in the opposite direction.

Such an arrangement would require extensive negotiations, as is typical with player exchanges. Arsenal have been receptive to bids for Martinelli, 25, this summer to balance their finances as they pursue a marquee attacking addition. They reportedly turned down a £38 million offer from Galatasaray last week and are holding out for a higher bid, despite the Brazilian winger's preference to stay in north London. Yildiz's £60 million valuation is more aligned with how Arsenal rate Martinelli, meaning a swap deal plus additional funds could be used to entice Juventus.
