ATM network Link has forecast a significant spike in cash withdrawals this Saturday, with an estimated £230 million expected to be taken out as football fans prepare to watch England's World Cup quarter-final match against Norway. The predicted increase of £10 million to £15 million compared to a typical Saturday for this time of year is driven by the excitement surrounding the game.
Weather and World Cup Dynamics
Typically, hot weather leads to a drop in ATM usage as people stay home to avoid the heat. However, Link notes that the World Cup factor overrides this trend. Graham Mott, director of strategy at Link, explained: "Typically, when the weather is super hot, we actually see a drop in ATM use as people tend to stay at home and try to keep out the heat. Naturally, it’s a bit different when England are involved in the World Cup."
Potential Sunday Boost
If England wins the quarter-final, the boost to ATM withdrawals could extend into Sunday. Mott added: "And you never know, if England do win, then we may see people take out a bit more to celebrate in the early hours of Sunday too." This potential ripple effect underscores the economic impact of major sporting events on consumer behaviour.
Economic Impact of Major Sporting Events
The World Cup bounce in cash withdrawals highlights how national team matches can influence spending patterns. Despite the rise of digital payments, cash remains important for social activities like pub gatherings and celebrations. Link's data suggests that football fans are likely to withdraw extra cash for refreshments, travel, and celebratory expenses during the match and potential victory events.
