Red Arrows to Receive £360m Upgrade with New RAF Jets
Red Arrows Get £360m Upgrade with New RAF Jets

The UK Ministry of Defence has committed £360 million to replace the Red Arrows' ageing Hawk T1 aircraft with new jets, securing the future of the iconic aerobatic display team. The investment is part of the British Jet Trainer system upgrade under the defence investment plan, which aims to "inspire young generations for decades to come."

Retirement of the Hawk T1

The Hawk T1 has been the backbone of the Red Arrows since 1979, and the team remains its sole operator. The new jets will allow the retirement of these aircraft, which have performed at thousands of events worldwide, drawing large crowds. Former Red Arrows pilot Andy Wyatt told the BBC: "It provides much-needed certainty that the process of replacing the Hawk aircraft is finally moving forward."

Competition for Replacement Model

The specific model to replace the Hawk has not been announced, but it will be determined through a competition the RAF is preparing to launch. Contenders include the Boeing and Saab T-7A Red Hawk, Leonardo M-346, and Korean T-50. Wyatt emphasized the importance of choosing a British-made aircraft: "The aircraft chosen must meet the RAF's operational requirements, but I hope equal weight will be given to supporting British engineering, protecting highly skilled jobs and preserving sovereign aerospace capability."

Additional Defence Investments

Beyond the Red Arrows upgrade, the defence plan includes £1.1 billion to upgrade RAF Typhoon fighters based in Lincolnshire and substantial investments in drone technology. The modern Hawk T2 aircraft, used for advanced training of fast-jet pilots at RAF Valley in Anglesey, have faced engine issues since their introduction in 2012, limiting availability. The new investment aims to address these challenges and ensure the Red Arrows continue to represent British excellence.
