The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has released the most popular baby names for 2025 in England and Wales, with Olivia topping the girls' list for the tenth consecutive year. For boys, Muhammad, Noah, and Leo secured the top three positions, with Leo pushing Oliver out of the top three.
Top Names and Regional Variations
The top three girls' names were Olivia, Lily, and Amelia, with Lily overtaking Amelia for second place. Olivia was the most popular name in three of nine regions in England and was the favourite in Wales. Muhammad topped the list in four of nine English regions but ranked 34th in Wales.
Birth Statistics and New Entries
In 2025, there were 585,396 live births in England and Wales—284,681 female and 300,715 male. New additions to the top 100 names include Eliana, Gracie, Anaya, Alba, Marnie, Lilah, and Frankie for girls, and Vincent, Carter, Stanley, and Ruben for boys.
Biggest Increases and Declines
The girls' names with the largest popularity increases were Eliana (up 54 places), Anaya (up 24), and Alba (up 24). For boys, Vinnie rose 33 places, Ruben 26, and Vincent 25. The girls' names that dropped off the top 100 were Jessica (down 44 places), Ellie (down 31), and Amelia (down 22). Among boys, Bodhi fell 18 places, Grayson 14, and Brody seven.
Popularity Breakdown
A total of 2,386 babies were named Olivia in 2025, while 5,957 boys were named Muhammad, accounting for 1.4% of all birth names. The top 10 names represented 9.1% of all births that year. The ONS notes that rankings are based on the exact spelling recorded at birth registration, with similar names counted separately.
