Newcastle United Yet to Decide on Nick Pope's Future as Training Begins
Newcastle United Yet to Decide on Nick Pope's Future

Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope has reported for pre-season training at the club's KNOX training ground, despite ongoing speculation linking him with a move to Ipswich Town this summer. According to Chronicle Live, Ipswich Town expressed interest in goalkeepers but never made a formal approach for Pope, while Leeds United have also not submitted any inquiry for the 34-year-old.

Pope was photographed alongside colleagues Mark Gillespie and French youngster Ewen Jaouen as the summer transfer window progressed without a move materializing. The club is reportedly open to letting Pope leave if a suitable offer arrives, but only on the condition that a replacement goalkeeper is brought in first.

Newcastle's Goalkeeping Options

Newcastle United has been linked with Manchester City's James Trafford, who serves as backup for the England national team, as well as Parma's Zion Suzuki. However, no deal has been finalized, leaving Pope, Gillespie, and Jaouen as the current options for the upcoming season.

Jaouen, a 6ft 6in French youth prospect, arrived at Newcastle two weeks early and expressed his delight at being on Tyneside. He told the club channel: "I am happy to be back on the pitch and happy to have the Newcastle kit on me and wearing the jersey feels good. I am happy it is on me. I have a lot of faces and names to remember, but it is nice to see so many nice people here, we can feel we are in a good club. The goalkeeper team is really nice. It is only the first day but I feel that we are really strong together."

Pope's Contract Situation

Pope enters the final year of his contract at Newcastle after recovering from being dropped last season following a costly error against Everton in a Premier League defeat. The club chose not to exercise an option to sign Aaron Ramsdale, who returned to his parent club Southampton. As it stands, Pope and Jaouen are expected to compete for the starting goalkeeper position early in the season.

Newcastle's stance remains flexible: while they will not block Pope's departure, any sale will only proceed once a new goalkeeper is secured. The situation could change rapidly if a club emerges for the veteran shot-stopper.
