Michael Edwards has resigned from his role as CEO of Football at Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool's parent company, deepening uncertainty behind the scenes at Anfield. Edwards, who returned to FSG two years ago, has left with one year remaining on his three-year contract.
Edwards' Departure and FSG's Multi-Club Plans
Edwards was brought back in 2024 with the remit of leading a multi-club operation, a strategy FSG ultimately could not execute despite negotiations with several European clubs. His departure was not unexpected; FSG had been aware of his intention to leave since last autumn but were unable to persuade him to stay.
Mike Gordon, FSG president, is expected to resume greater day-to-day control of Liverpool, a role he held for many years prior to Edwards' appointment.
Richard Hughes' Future in Doubt
The exit comes amid mounting speculation over the future of Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes. Hughes, who is under contract until next summer, was instrumental in appointing Andoni Iraola as head coach last month to replace the sacked Arne Slot. However, rumours persist that Hughes could leave after the summer transfer window, with strong links to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal, which recently hired his former Bournemouth colleague Simon Francis as technical director.
Edwards' Legacy at Liverpool
Edwards first joined Liverpool in 2011 and rose to sporting director in 2016. Under his leadership, the club gained a formidable reputation in the transfer market, contributing to multiple trophies under Jurgen Klopp. However, since assuming the FSG role, Edwards had not been involved in Liverpool's transfer activity, with Hughes overseeing market dealings and contract negotiations.
The combination of Edwards' resignation and Hughes' uncertain future leaves Liverpool facing a period of instability in key football operations roles.
