Mark Viduka, the former Premier League striker, once turned down Manchester United after holding secret talks with legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Now, the Australian forward runs a coffee shop in Zagreb, Croatia, far from the glitz and glamour of top-flight football.
Viduka made an instant impact upon joining Leeds United from Celtic in 2000, scoring 17 league goals in his debut season. His performances, including a memorable four-goal haul against Liverpool, caught the attention of Manchester United, who initiated transfer discussions.
Remarkably, these secret negotiations were nearly exposed by Elton John. Viduka recalled to ESPN in 2020 that the singer almost revealed the transfer talks during a concert, dedicating a song to his 'good friend Mark' who was in Manchester to make a big decision. Viduka was relieved John did not say more.
Despite interest from AC Milan as well, Viduka chose to sign a new five-year deal with Leeds, citing his love for living in the city. However, his time at Elland Road was not without turbulence. He fell out with manager Terry Venables during the 2002/03 season, who banished him to the reserves as the club sought to sell him. Viduka responded by scoring 14 goals in the final 10 matches, ensuring Leeds avoided relegation.
Viduka eventually moved to Middlesbrough after Leeds were relegated in 2004. He scored 59 goals in 130 league appearances for the club. Since retiring in 2009, he has owned the Non Plus Ultra coffee shop in Zagreb, a city where he lived during his time at Dinamo Zagreb. Viduka says he enjoys the peaceful lifestyle in Croatia, especially being away from football.
Viduka remains a fan of Leeds and watches their matches with his sons. He fondly remembers the club's fearless European campaigns against Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Lazio. He will also be following Australia's fortunes at the upcoming World Cup, two decades after leading the Socceroos in 2006.
