Manchester United have added Scotland star Angus Gunn to their shortlist for a new second-choice goalkeeper. The 30-year-old started all three of Scotland's group matches at the World Cup, despite being released by Nottingham Forest earlier this summer.
Gunn's free agent status makes him an attractive option
The shot-stopper made only a solitary appearance during his one-year stay at the City Ground and is now available on a free transfer. United's search for a backup to Senne Lammens has led them to identify Gunn as a target, according to a report from the Sun.
Gunn came through Manchester City's academy when United director of football Jason Wilcox was a coach and later head of the academy. He left City in 2018 following a loan spell with Norwich City, the same club his father Bryan was playing for when Angus was born. After three years at Southampton, Gunn joined Norwich on a permanent basis before being released last summer and picked up by Forest.
Scotland's World Cup campaign ends in disappointment
Despite his lack of game time for Forest, Gunn remained Scotland's number one goalkeeper. However, he was unable to help Steve Clarke's side accumulate more than three points at the World Cup. Their minus three goal difference, following a 3-0 defeat to Brazil on Wednesday, makes it unlikely they will finish the group stage as one of the eight best third-placed teams.
Gunn would almost certainly warm the bench again if he joined United, with Lammens having enjoyed a superb first season. Altay Bayindir served as number two last season while Andre Onana was sent out on loan, but the Red Devils plan to sell both goalkeepers. With Radek Vitek's future also uncertain after an impressive loan spell at Bristol City, 40-year-old Tom Heaton is not seen as a suitable understudy for Lammens.
Other goalkeeper targets on United's radar
Another goalkeeper on United's radar is Leeds United's Karl Darlow. The 35-year-old is out of contract next week but remains in talks over a new deal at Elland Road. Wolves' Sam Johnstone has also been linked, with the 33-year-old having come through United's academy.
Midfield remains Michael Carrick's top priority for the summer transfer window, although the Red Devils look set to miss out on two of their top targets. Elliot Anderson has been priced at an obscene £130 million, a fee United are reportedly unwilling to pay. Meanwhile, Mateus Fernandes is edging closer to joining Tottenham, who are ready to gazump United's bid and sign him in a deal worth up to £80 million. The Red Devils are, however, expected to welcome Atalanta's Ederson for £35 million after the World Cup.
