Manchester United are reportedly on the verge of signing Swansea City goalkeeper Kit Margetson, which would be their first new arrival of the summer transfer window. The 19-year-old is out of contract with the Championship club after negotiations over a new deal broke down.
Margetson's Background and Potential Role
Margetson has been with Swansea since Under-15s level and did not make a first-team appearance for the club. He gained some senior experience during a loan spell with Connah's Quay Nomads last season. According to BBC Sport, United are now set to sign the teenager, with plans to integrate him into the club's Under-21s setup to continue his development.
Goalkeeping Department Changes
United are expected to see significant changes in their goalkeeping department this summer. First-choice Andre Onana is set to join Turkish side Trabzonspor on loan for the second consecutive season, having spent last year with the club. Second-choice Altay Bayindir is also expected to leave in search of more regular game time, having been behind Senne Lammens in the pecking order last season. Meanwhile, third-choice Tom Heaton has signed a new contract at Old Trafford.
Heaton's Commitment
Upon signing his new deal, Heaton said: "It is a huge honour to continue to represent Manchester United. You can feel the determination and ambition of everyone throughout the club to keep pushing for success. I am really excited to play my role in driving us forward and helping the group to compete for the biggest honours." Heaton has made just three first-team appearances for United since joining on a free transfer in 2020.
Other Transfer Targets
United have also been linked with Leeds United's Karl Darlow as a potential backup to Lammens. Darlow is out of contract at Elland Road, making him available on a free transfer, though Everton are also reportedly interested. Should Margetson's move be completed, he would be the first new signing under manager Michael Carrick. United are also closing in on a £35 million move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson.
