Orozco Set to Join United This Week
Manchester United are set to announce the signing of Colombian teenager Cristian Orozco this week. The club reached an agreement with Fortaleza CEIF nine months ago, but the deal stipulated that he would join in the summer transfer window once he turned 18. United have paid around $1 million (£750,000) for the midfielder, who is not an immediate first-team addition but is seen as a potential future star.
Orozco arrived in Manchester over a week ago to settle in before his transfer is officially completed on Monday. He will initially join the Under-21s squad for assessment by United coaches.
Ineos-Driven Youth Recruitment Strategy
Orozco is the latest in a series of high-potential young signings from abroad, a strategy implemented by Ineos after taking control of the club's football operations. Recent examples include Sekou Kone from Mali, Diego Leon from Paraguay, and Enzo Kana-Biyik from Le Havre AC in France.
United have always recruited young players for their academy, but the profile of targets has shifted. Due to Brexit rules, the club can no longer sign players under 18 from Europe, forcing them to wait until those players turn 18—by which time they are often already tied to other clubs. This has led United to explore new markets, such as South America and Africa, where they can secure young talents earlier.
Low Risk, High Reward Model
The transfers are essentially low risk and potentially high reward. The best-case scenario is that these players break into the first team; the worst case is that they are sold for a profit. Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) have been a major factor, with some Premier League clubs buying young players specifically to generate future profit.
United sources have stressed that each deal is driven by the player's first-team potential, but breaking through remains difficult. Kone and Leon have yet to make their first-team debuts. Kone was named in three Premier League matchday squads in 2024-25 under Ruben Amorim but did not play. He was loaned to Ineos-owned FC Lausanne-Sport in January and was not included in their UEFA Conference League squad. Kone has returned to Lausanne for pre-season, and a season-long loan is likely.
Leon was unveiled alongside Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko last summer but played only in academy fixtures. He was an unused substitute against Manchester City, Brentford, and Sunderland early in the season but did not make the bench after October. Leon has shown glimpses of potential in academy matches but remains raw, making a loan the best option for his development.
Financial Implications and Future Prospects
United are likely to make a profit on Kone, who was signed for around £1 million. Leon's deal from Cerro Porteno was worth £3.3 million upfront, potentially rising to £7 million with add-ons, making a profit less certain. Both players have time on their side, and fans will be watching Orozco's development closely as the latest example of this evolving transfer strategy.
