Barry Ferguson has urged Rangers to bring Vaclav Cerny back to Ibrox, describing a potential move for the Czech winger as a 'no brainer' if he becomes available. Ferguson worked with Cerny during his interim spell as Rangers head coach at the end of the 2024/25 season and believes the 28-year-old would be a game-changing addition.
Cerny's Impact at Rangers
Cerny made a significant impact during his loan spell from Wolfsburg in 2024/25, scoring 18 goals in all competitions. He is currently at Besiktas on a reported £2.5 million per year salary, which could complicate a deal for Rangers. However, Ferguson insists the club should pursue him if the opportunity arises.
In his Record Sport column, Ferguson said: 'I worked with him during my time in charge and it’s a transfer that should have happened last summer. I’d take him in a heartbeat. I liked everything about Vash.'
Ferguson's Endorsement
Ferguson praised Cerny's character and ability, noting: 'He probably didn’t understand how big the club was when he first came but he soon took to it. He’s got a bit about him. When things weren’t going right, he wasn’t happy. He had a bit of anger in him, which I really like.' He added: 'The thing about Cerny is, he’s a game-changer. His numbers were really good at Rangers. When we got him on it, he was on fire for us.'
Ferguson highlighted that Cerny's familiarity with the club would eliminate any settling-in period: 'The beauty of getting someone like Vash back is that he knows the club already, he understands it. He wouldn’t need a setting-in period. He knows the environment he’s coming into.'
Rangers' Transfer Activity
New Rangers boss Derek McInnes has already added Lawrence Shankland, Ross McCrorie, Ivor Pandur, Dan Neil, and Ben Godfrey to the squad this summer. The club is also in the market for wide players, making Cerny a logical target.
Meanwhile, Rangers are pursuing Tromso midfielder Jens Hjerto-Dahl but will not be held to ransom over the fee. The Norwegian Under-21 star has been on the club's radar, but Rangers are unwilling to meet Tromso's reported £8.5 million asking price.
Talks continue with Partizan Belgrade over captain Vanja Dragojevic, with Rangers increasing their initial £3.8 million bid. However, Record Sport understands the club is not interested in Sturm Graz's Ryan Fosso, despite reports in Austria.
Outgoings and Loans
Rangers are braced for bids for Belgian star Nico Raskin after his impressive World Cup displays, with interest from England and Europe. The club is also looking to offload Jose Cifuentes, Danilo, Oscar Cortes, Nedim Bajrami, and Ross McCausland, who are deemed surplus to requirements.
Youngsters Kyle Glasgow and Max Cameron are set to join Alloa Athletic on loan for the start of the new campaign.
