Lucky, a seven-part limited series based on Marissa Stapley's New York Times bestselling novel, will premiere on Apple TV on Wednesday, July 15, with the first two episodes released that day. Subsequent episodes will air weekly on Wednesdays. The series follows a brilliant con artist who goes on the run after a multi-million dollar heist goes wrong, hunted by both the FBI and a merciless crime lord.
Starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Executive Produced by Reese Witherspoon
The titular role of Lucky is played by Anya Taylor-Joy, known for her Golden Globe-winning performance as Beth Harmon in Netflix's The Queen's Gambit, as well as roles in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, The Witch, Peaky Blinders, and The Split. Reese Witherspoon, who selected Stapley's 2021 novel for her Reese's Book Club, serves as executive producer through her production company Hello Sunshine.
Taylor-Joy revealed on ITV's This Morning that Witherspoon envisioned her for the role from the start. "I got a call saying Reese wanted to send me a book and that she wanted to co-produce with me, which is obviously the most incredible sentence to hear through a telephone," Taylor-Joy said. "When I read the book, I really felt like I had something to add to it, which you want to feel as a producer, and from that moment on, it's been the most beautiful collaboration."
Critical Acclaim for the Source Material
Even before its television debut, Lucky has garnered praise from readers. One reviewer on Goodreads described it as "a gripping, heart-wrenching journey of resilience, hope, and redemption. A stunning read!" Another called it "a real page turner," while a third noted: "This fast-paced, plot-driven tale is full of unexpected plot twists that'll keep you guessing about Lucky and the lottery ticket until the very last page. Part action-adventure, part family saga, Lucky is full of heart." A further reader shared: "Finished in less than a day because I just couldn't put it down!"
The series is expected to appeal to fans of Peaky Blinders and other gritty crime dramas, with Taylor-Joy's involvement adding to the anticipation. Lucky promises a blend of suspense, family dynamics, and redemption, as the protagonist uses her criminal past to survive.
