Bride Bans Friend from Wearing Engagement Ring to Wedding
Bride Bans Friend from Wearing Engagement Ring to Wedding

A woman has been left questioning whether to attend a friend's wedding after the bride demanded she not wear her new engagement ring because its blue sapphire gemstone clashes with the bridesmaids' pale blue dresses.

Bride Objects to Ring Color

The guest, who shared her story on Reddit, said she and her fiancé are due to attend the wedding of their friends Tilly and Peter next month. She recently got engaged and was excited to show off her ring when they met up for the first time since the proposal.

When they asked to see the ring, Tilly noted that it was much lighter than the photos we'd shared, the woman wrote. The engagement ring features a light blue sapphire, although it appears much darker in photographs.

Accusations of Stealing Spotlight

After commenting on the color, the bride reminded her that the bridesmaids would be wearing pale blue dresses. The groom then joked that having a ring in that shade was no excuse for breaking the rules, referring to the couple's dress code requesting guests avoid wearing pale blue.

Thinking he was joking, the woman laughed and reassured them she wasn't planning to wear a blue outfit anyway. But moments later, the bride made it clear she was being completely serious.

Tilly then said Peter was talking around the issue, and that I wouldn't be able to wear my engagement ring at their wedding because it was too close to their shade of blue, the woman added. She said she'd already had to make sure a family member wasn't going to wear a necklace with similar gemstones for the same reason.

Couple Accused of Timing Proposal

The woman and her fiancé questioned whether it was reasonable to ask someone to remove their engagement ring, explaining she'd barely taken it off since he proposed.

Tilly and Peter were insistent that I would be creating drama by wearing it and that, if anything, it suggested I was trying to steal focus away from them and the wedding party, she said. I made it clear that I had zero intention of doing that, but also that the ring was not going to distract from a bride and groom standing at the end of the aisle.

The conversation escalated even further when the couple allegedly suggested the proposal itself had been timed to take attention away from their wedding. At one point, my partner was even accused of proposing to me as a way of taking more attention from them during their wedding timeline, she said. She insisted the proposal had taken place on the couple's seven-year anniversary while they were on a once-in-a-lifetime holiday.

Social Media Backlash

The disagreement ended without either side backing down, and the woman now fears she and her fiancé could be uninvited from the wedding altogether. Seeking opinions, she asked whether she was in the wrong for refusing to remove her engagement ring.

Most social media users thought the bride's request was completely unreasonable. One user said: Goodness. I hope no one with blue eyes attend. Worrying about something as small as a ring is ridiculous. Another added: If a single ring will steal the spotlight from the wedding party… they must have the personality and charisma of a bucket of plaster. A third user said: What's she going to do if the sky happens to be close to that particular shade of blue? Tell God to change it? No one is going to be looking at a guest's hands during a wedding.
