Skywatchers across the UK are in for a rare treat as a solar eclipse will obscure up to 95% of the Sun at maximum – the most since the total eclipse of 1999. It will be the UK's fullest solar eclipse for the next 54 years.
Timings across the UK
Times vary by location, but in general the eclipse will occur between 6.17pm and 8.06pm, with maximum between 7.10pm and 7.14pm.
- Glasgow: 6.15pm to 8.05pm, maximum at 7.11pm.
- Greater Manchester: 6.13pm to 8.03pm, maximum at 7.10pm.
- Birmingham: 6.15pm to 8.05pm, maximum at 7.11pm.
- London: 6.17pm to 8.06pm, maximum at 7.13pm.
- Portsmouth: 6.18pm to 8.07pm, maximum at 7.14pm.
Safety and science
Viewers are urged to take care and only view the eclipse safely to avoid damaging their eyes. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, casting a shadow. Depending on location, up to 96% of the Sun will be covered.
