The heatwave that has gripped vast swathes of the UK is set to end with four consecutive days of showers, according to new weather forecasts. The rainy period is also set to send temperatures tumbling, ending the country’s fifth heatwave of the year. The change in weather will likely be welcomed by many as dozens of wildfires rage across the country and water stocks continue to fall amid the extreme heat and dry conditions.
Rain Map Shows Heavy Downpours
According to the WXCharts.com weather map, Sunday will see some heavy rainfall in large areas across the UK. Rain is expected across the whole of Scotland, with the north-west coast expected to see up to around 84mm of rain. Much of the Highlands, north-east, central, south-west and south-east Scotland will see downpours bring in around 47mm of rain, which could be up to around 54mm in some places.
The rain is expected to be lighter the further south, however some big showers are still predicted in pockets of north-west England, north-west and south Wales, and northern and central Northern Ireland. Some spots of drizzle are also expected in areas of south and south-east England, which along with much of Wales have been the regions worst affected by the extreme conditions.
Drought and Temperature Drop
Almost three-quarters of England and the whole of Wales is currently in drought. The rainfall is expected to see a drop in temperatures too, according to the weather map. It suggests on Sunday afternoon, Scotland will see temperatures in the low to mid teens. It’s a similar story in Northern Ireland and northern parts of Wales and England. Southern England and South Wales are expected to be warmer, with highs in the high teens and low 20s, the map shows.
According to WXCharts.com, the rain is set to continue on Monday with southern England set to see the wettest conditions. Rain is expected to be largely light (between around 17 and 22mm) but could be heavier in some south coast areas. The rest of the UK is predicted to be largely dry. Temperatures will be in the mid to high teens for most of Wales and England, with it expected to be cooler in Scotland and Northern Ireland, the map shows.
Further Showers and Met Office Outlook
Tuesday is set to see some similar temperatures but heavier rainfall. Scotland is again likely to see the heaviest showers with up to around 17-24mm expected in most northern and central areas. The rest of the UK is tipped to get either no rain or a minimal amount. While on Wednesday, the WXCharts.com map suggests much of the country will again be largely dry. East Anglia is predicted to see the heaviest showers, with largely between 17 and 23mm of rain expected. Temperatures in the mid to high teens are forecast for much of the country.
The Met Office’s forecast for Sunday to Tuesday says: “Fresher conditions reach the southeast by Sunday and generally staying dry into next week with sunny spells. Turning breezier in the northwest as various rain bands push in, perhaps heavy.”
