Britons may soon get a short break from the ongoing heatwave, with the latest weather maps indicating a sharp drop in temperatures over the coming days. Data from WXCharts suggests that the current spell of hot weather could be replaced by much cooler conditions by August 24, with temperatures in some areas forecast to fall as low as 2C.
Coldest Conditions in Scotland
According to the weather maps, the coldest conditions will be seen around Scotland with areas around Inverness experiencing 2C. Parts of the Midlands will witness single-digit temperatures with mercury levels oscillating between 5 and 6 °C.
Heatwave Peak and Records
The charts come as the UK saw another heatwave with temperatures peaking at 38C. Temperatures provisionally climbed to 38.1C at Kew Gardens in London, making it the fifth hottest day ever recorded in the UK. Elsewhere, Pershore in Worcestershire reached 38C, while 40 locations across central and southern England registered temperatures of 36°C or higher, highlighting the widespread intensity of the heat across much of the country.
Chief Forecaster Neil Armstrong, said: “This current spell of extreme heat is the latest in a remarkable summer. Numerous temperature records have been broken and we’ve seen an exceptionally dry season across much of England and Wales too.”
Forecast and Outlook
Armstrong added: “Temperatures will remain high overnight in the east, with a widespread tropical night likely where temperatures don’t fall below 20°C. Friday will be a less hot day, with temperatures forecast to reach highs of 34°C in the south east. Into the weekend temperatures could still hover over 30°C in the south, with a gradual return to average over the next few days.”
The Met Office’s long-range forecast between August 18 and 27 reads: “A rather more changeable spell of weather through the mid to latter part of August, with Atlantic frontal systems bringing some rain or showers at times to the UK. The heavier and more reliable rainfall is more likely to be in parts of the west and northwest, but it is possible that some southern and eastern areas will see rain at times too. Later in the period high pressure may have more of an influence with drier conditions returning for many areas. Temperatures are likely to remain above average overall, with the possibility of further hot weather developing.”
