The biggest partial solar eclipse in 27 years is set to be visible this evening, with the Moon passing between the Sun and Earth and casting a shadow. While parts of Spain and Iceland are expected to witness a total eclipse, the UK will see a partial eclipse of up to 94 per cent coverage – the most since 1999.
Safety warnings and glasses demand
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has warned that only glasses with 'ISO 12312-2' printed on them are safe to wear. Sunglasses and normal glasses are not suitable. Due to 'unprecedented demand', correct glasses have been selling out online and in shops, prompting many to craft DIY projectors.
Public gatherings and timings
Some public gatherings, including at Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Jodrell Bank, as well as parks in Greater Manchester like Platt Fields and Heaton Park, will be handing out glasses, but these are in high demand. In Manchester, the partial eclipse is set to begin just after 6.10pm and end just after 8pm.
