Storm Boelo: 80mph gusts and amber warning for North East

Storm Boelo is set to bring strong winds and heavy rain to the North East, with gusts potentially exceeding 80mph in some areas. The Met Office has issued both yellow and amber weather warnings for Saturday and Sunday.

Yellow and amber warnings in place

A yellow weather warning is active across Scotland and the North of the UK, including the North East, from 12pm today. Strong southerly winds will initially affect parts of Scotland before more widespread and stronger westerly winds develop later on Saturday.

Gusts of 55-65mph are likely widely, with coastal and exposed areas in the North of England and Scotland potentially seeing gusts of 70-80mph or more.

Amber warning for Saturday evening

A second amber weather warning has been issued for Saturday evening as the strongest winds from Storm Boelo are expected to extend eastwards. The amber warning, in place from 9pm on Saturday until 9pm on Sunday, covers Scotland, north Northumberland, Carlisle, and the North East of Northern Ireland.

Travel disruption and event cancellations

Storm Boelo follows Storm Austen, which hit the South West on Friday. Forecasters have warned of widespread travel disruption to ferries and trains, with many cancellations of events across the North East for the weekend already announced.

Updates on the storms impacting the UK and any forecast changes will be provided as they come.
