Storm Austen: Yellow Wind Warning for Merseyside Friday

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for strong winds across Merseyside on Friday, October 23, as Storm Austen is set to hit the UK. The alert comes into force at 10am and remains in place until 9pm.

Warning Details and Affected Areas

The alert states: "A spell of strong winds, touching gales at times, associated with Storm Austen may bring some localised impacts." The warning was originally in place for southeastern areas and Wales, but the Met Office has extended it to Merseyside. Other affected areas include Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Warrington.

The Met Office said: "While the winds across the warning area are not expected to be as strong as those further south and west, a spell of inland gales is possible with gusts around 45mph to 55mph during Friday daytime. In combination with locally heavy rain and many trees still in full leaf, there is potential for some power outages and travel disruption."

Potential Impacts

Coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities may be affected by spray and/or large waves. There could be delays on roads and short-term losses of power. Public transport may see some disruption, with journeys possibly taking longer.
