A partial solar eclipse will be visible from the UK tonight, with more than 90% of the Sun covered by the Moon in one of the rarest astronomical events a generation can experience.
Timings and Coverage in Liverpool
In Liverpool, the moment the Moon first covers the disc of the Sun is expected at 6.13pm. The eclipse maximum will occur at 7.10pm, before the event ends at 8.03pm when the Moon is no longer covering the Sun.
Best Viewing Locations
The best places to watch the solar eclipse are areas with little light pollution, especially those at high altitudes. St Helens' Billinge Hill is the highest natural peak in Merseyside, standing at 179 metres.
On Merseyside, Crosby Beach and the wider coast of Sefton is expected to be one of the most popular viewing spots. The Bus Yard bar in Crosby, which overlooks the beach, will be open during the eclipse and will be hosting live music.
Safety Advice
It is not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialised eye protection for solar viewing. NASA has stated on its website that it is dangerous to view the Sun through a camera lens, binoculars or a telescope without a special-purpose solar filter secured over the front of the optics.
