A person was airlifted to hospital after an incident at the River Wear in Sunderland in the early hours of Saturday, October 3. A large emergency response saw police, paramedics, the Coastguard and its helicopter, the Great North Air Ambulance and Sunderland RNLI attend the scene next to Wessington Way.
Emergency services called at 2.30am
They were called at around 2.30am and a person was airlifted to hospital. The nature of the incident or the injuries sustained by the casualty were unclear.
A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to an incident near Wessington Way in Sunderland on Saturday October 3 at 2.38am. We dispatched three ambulance crews, two HART crews (Hazardous Area Response Team) and were supported by HM Coastguard and Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS)."
Coastguard helicopter transports patient to RVI
"One patient was transported by HM Coastguard rescue helicopter with a GNAAS doctor to the RVI hospital for further treatment."
A Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokesperson said: "At around 3.30am on October 3, HM Coastguard attended an incident on the River Wear. Coastguard rescue teams from Sunderland and Seaham were sent, together with an HM Coastguard Helicopter, the Sunderland RNLI lifeboat and the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade."
Life brigade helps secure landing site
"The North East Ambulance Service and Northumbria Police also attended."
Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade confirmed they were requested to help secure the landing site for the HM Coastguard helicopter near the RVI but did not attend the scene at the River Wear. Northumbria Police were contacted for comment.
