Man in court over BMW torched in Johnstone

A 43-year-old man is due to appear at Paisley Sheriff Court on Monday after being charged following an investigation into a wilful fire.

The man was arrested in connection with a grey BMW 3 Series being set on fire in the Buchanan Street area of Johnstone in Renfrewshire.

The incident happened around 3.15am on Thursday, 1 October.

Fire extinguished by SFRS

Police Scotland attended, with the fire extinguished by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS). Images taken from the scene later on Thursday morning showed the front of the car burnt out, with the remains of the engine still visible.

A child's car seat could also be seen through the smashed windows of the wreck, alongside some sort of pink fabric sitting across the back seat. Officers taped off the scene around the vehicle as their inquiries into the blaze were carried out.

No injuries reported

There were no reported injuries.

An SFRS spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 3.11am on Thursday, 1 October to reports of a vehicle fire in Johnstone. Operations Control mobilised one appliance to the town's Buchanan Street, where firefighters extinguished a well-developed fire.

"There were no casualties."

It comes amid a number of other blazes across Scotland.
