Northern has issued an update on its service levels, advising passengers in Greater Manchester to only travel if essential amid the ongoing extreme heatwave. The operator announced that all trains in and out of Manchester are running on a reduced service on Thursday, June 25, and Friday, June 26.
Service Disruptions and Closures
In an update issued this afternoon, Northern confirmed that the Preston to Blackburn line is closed, and passengers are advised not to travel as no alternative options are available. The Warrington Central to Liverpool Lime Street and the Wigan North Western to Liverpool Lime Street routes are both operating a reduced service.
Northern stated: "For anyone travelling today, we strongly recommend you check before you travel. Make sure carry water with you. And if you're feeling unwell, stay at the station and speak to station staff."
Widespread Heatwave Impact on Rail Services
Avanti West Coast has cut one train per hour on its Birmingham, Liverpool, and Manchester routes between Tuesday and Friday. Many operators have eased ticket restrictions, allowing refunds without fees or use on alternative dates.
Road Breakdowns Surge
The RAC reported that the number of call-outs for broken down vehicles on Wednesday was a fifth higher than usual. RAC road safety spokesperson Rod Dennis said: "London, Essex, Kent and Sussex all saw the biggest increases in vehicles failing in the hot weather. Top faults included tyres – with blowouts more common in the heat as pressure in the rubber builds – batteries and overheated engines. Today is looking just as busy as temperatures climb even higher. As much of the country endures a further day of extreme heat, we cannot emphasise enough the dangers of breaking down in these conditions. Anyone who can delay non-essential trips until the weather starts to cool should do so."
