Millions across England and Wales received an emergency alert from the UK government on Thursday evening at around 7pm, warning of a 'very high risk of wildfires' and urging people to avoid activities that could start a fire, such as lighting barbecues, campfires, or fireworks. However, some Brits reported not receiving the alert, which triggers a loud siren on phones.
Why Some Didn't Get the Alert
According to the government website, your phone must be switched on and be a 'compatible' device—connected to a 4G or 5G network with the latest software updates. Older phones on 2G or 3G networks are 'incompatible,' and airplane mode can also prevent the alert. Ofcom has previously estimated that around five million Brits still use older connectivity.

The alert read: 'There is a very high risk of wildfires nationally. Residents, landowners and visitors should not undertake any activity that could start a fire, including disposable barbecues, firepits, garden incinerators or fireworks. Even a small flame can rapidly develop into a major wildfire placing lives, homes, businesses and emergency responders at risk. Follow official updates and report signs of fire immediately by calling 999.'
Barbecue Ban and Sales
While there is no legal consequence for using a barbecue, the government has issued a temporary ban on the sale of disposable barbecues, deeming them a 'significant risk to the public, and the environment.' Despite this, some social media users reported seeing them still on shelves, including on Amazon and in corner shops, and a stand with charcoal was spotted in a Sainsbury's in Essex. Prime Minister Andy Burnham stressed the seriousness, saying: 'Setting a fire in any outdoor setting of any kind is a risk to other people's homes, it's a risk to other people's lives, don't do it, please don't do it.'
