Met Office thunderstorm warning for 6 areas on Friday

The Met Office has issued a yellow thunderstorm warning covering six counties in Northern Ireland from midnight until 6am on Friday, August 14. The warning, issued at 10.20am on Thursday, highlights the risk of torrential downpours, lightning, hail and gusty winds, with a small chance of fast-flowing or deep floodwater posing a "danger to life".

Heavy downpours and possible flooding

Warm and very humid conditions across Northern Ireland are expected to increase the risk of scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms. The Met Office said: "Whilst many areas will miss these, where they develop 10-20 mm of rain could fall in less than an hour, with a chance of a few areas seeing 20-30 mm in less than an hour. This could lead to some flooding in places. Lightning, hail and gusty winds will be additional hazards."

Showers and thunderstorms could merge into longer spells of rain, particularly across western areas. Spray and sudden flooding may cause difficult driving conditions and road closures, while homes and businesses could also be flooded.

Travel disruption and power cuts

Train and bus services may face delays or cancellations, with some communities potentially cut off by flooded roads. There is also a chance of power cuts and disruption to other services.

The Met Office advised: "Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary." It added: "If you find yourself outside and hear thunder, protect yourself by finding a safe enclosed shelter (such as a car)."

Full list of areas covered

The warning covers the following counties: County Antrim, County Armagh, County Down, County Fermanagh, County Londonderry, and County Tyrone.
