The Met Office has named 16 areas that will see no rain on Sunday, August 16, as much of the UK remains dry amid drought conditions.
Rain forecast for Sunday
Maps show that on Sunday, a lot of areas will not see any rain. The south of England will hardly see a drop, with only the north of England set to see some slightly wetter weather.
The east of England looks to be completely dry, along with the Midlands, the south west and London.
Areas staying dry
Areas which will not see any rain include Portsmouth, Oxford, Birmingham, Sussex, Essex, Brighton, Dover, Cornwall and Shropshire.
In Wales, only mid-Wales looks set to avoid the rain. In Scotland, Aberdeen, Cairngorms National Park, and the east coast will avoid the wetter weather. As for Northern Ireland, rain will make its way across the region, but Belfast will remain dry.
Drought situation
Due to the extreme heat, some parts of England are now in a “flash drought” as a dry start to August follows the country’s driest July on record, the Environment Agency (EA) has said. The announcement came after a meeting of officials, water companies and farming leaders under the National Drought Group, which warned that all regions of the country are experiencing pressure on their water resources, with impacts on agriculture, public water supplies and the environment.
Last week, the EA announced that half of England had plunged into flash drought – one which develops very quickly because of a combination of very low rainfall and high temperatures – and the latest announcement means 71.3% of the country is in drought.
Met Office forecast
The Met Office five-day forecast says that for this evening and tonight, weather will be "Dry for many. Isolated thunderstorms pushing eastwards this evening and overnight, with heavy downpours particularly possible over eastern England. Warm and muggy in the southeast, but fresher than recent nights elsewhere. A few showers for northern Scotland."
For Saturday, it says: "Still very warm and humid for southeast England as heavy showers and thunderstorms clear. Widely fine elsewhere with sunny spells and nearer average temperatures, though showers continuing for northern Scotland."
For Sunday to Tuesday, it says: "Fresher conditions reach the southeast by Sunday and generally staying dry into next week with sunny spells. Turning breezier in the northwest as various rain bands push in, perhaps heavy."
