Met Office Issues Thunderstorm Warning for North West England

The Met Office has issued a new yellow weather warning for thunderstorms across parts of North West England, North East England, Yorkshire and the Humber. The warning is in effect from 2pm to 9pm on Friday, covering a seven-hour period.

Record Heat Followed by Storms

This warning comes after the UK recorded its hottest day on record on Thursday, June 25, with provisional figures showing temperatures reached 36.4°C in Yeovilton, Somerset. High temperatures continued into Friday, prompting the Met Office to name 18 areas across England that could experience heavy rain, gusty winds, thunderstorms, frequent lightning, and potential hail.

The Met Office warning states: "Many areas missing the worst, but thunderstorms could bring disruption in places this afternoon and early evening." It adds: "Whilst most places will miss them, scattered thunderstorms may break out this afternoon and early evening. Where storms do occur, heavy rain, large hail, gusty winds and frequent lightning are all possible with 15 to 30 mm rain falling in a short space of time in a few places."

Additionally, the Met Office has issued yellow thunderstorm warnings for Northern Ireland (from 10am to 10pm on Friday) and Scotland (from midnight Friday to 3am on Saturday).
