The Met Office has issued its verdict on the chances of the UK seeing a heatwave during September as temperatures begin to soar.
Greater Manchester is forecast to see temperatures rising up to 23C on Monday (September 14), according to Met Office weather maps, with areas across southern England also expected to reach 24C.
As temperatures appear to be on the rise across parts of the UK, some reports are suggesting hot weather could continue throughout September, as the Daily Star reports 'warmer than average' temperatures potentially stretching up to October 11.
Met Office warns of changeable conditions
However the Met Office has warned the remainder of the month could bring a "fairly mixed picture across the UK", adding that conditions could remain "changeable" for many.
Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Tony Wisson, said: "September is expected to continue to bring a fairly mixed picture across the UK, with a continuation of the changeable weather pattern we've seen recently. Weather systems moving in from the Atlantic are likely to continue to bring periods of rain and showers, combined with brighter and drier spells.
"The wettest and windiest conditions are expected to be focused across northern and western areas, while southern and eastern parts of the UK are more likely to experience longer dry periods and occasional warmer spells. Overall, temperatures are likely to be around average or slightly above average for the time of year."
Forecast for the rest of the week
He continued: "Looking further ahead, there are some tentative signs that higher pressure could become more influential later in the month, potentially bringing settled conditions more widely for a time, but confidence in this remains relatively low at this stage.
"The strongest signal is for the current changeable pattern to continue, with areas of low pressure bringing further spells of rain, particularly in the north and west, while the south and east are more likely to see drier weather at times."
While Greater Manchester is expected to see temperatures surpassing 20C on Monday, forecasters have suggested that they could once again drop over the remainder of the week. The Met Office warned the North West may feel "fresher than recent days" on Tuesday (September 15), with maximum temperatures reaching 18C.
Issuing a forecast for Wednesday to Friday this week across the North West, the Met Office said: "Changeable over the next few days and feeling fresher. Sunshine and showers will spread across the region, and it will turn increasingly windy."
