Two 25-year-old male runners from the North East have died after collapsing during Sunday's Great North Run, organisers confirmed on Monday. The Great Run Company released a statement expressing deep sadness over the deaths of the two participants.
Statement from organisers
The Great Run Company said: "It is with deep sadness that The Great Run Company can confirm the death of two participants at yesterday's Great North Run. The two runners, both 25 year old males from the North East, collapsed at the event, and despite the very best efforts of our medical teams later passed away. In each case the cause of death will be determined in due course."
"Everyone involved in organising the Great North Run extends their heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the two participants. We are continuing to support their families during this incredibly difficult time, and our thoughts and sympathies are with all those who loved and knew them. To respect the privacy of the families, no further details will be released."
Event details and previous tragedy
The 13.1-mile race returned on Sunday with 63,000 participants. In 2024, Sam Wealleans, a 29-year-old from Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, died after falling ill during the event. He was fundraising for mental health charity Mind in memory of his sister, Carly, and a close family friend.
